Inauguration
The Botany reunion this year was well attended. We were blessed with
the presence of Mathen sir. In spite of all the busy schedules, Joyce
Mathew sir, Velayudhan Thampi sir Paulose sir, C. M. Mathew sir and
Mani sir came for the function. We, the present faculty were moved by
the inspiring words of Mathen sir, while he mentioned the names of
each one of us. Sir added that as a budding biotechnologist, he has
great expectations in the junior most faculty Dr. Anil Kumar, who has
M Sc with first rank in Genetics and Plant breeding and Ph. D. in
plant biotechnology. We had a good number of the senior alumni, and 21
people were honored with Ponnada. The reflections they shared were
indeed memorable.

Dr. K. V. Paulose, former HOD honored with Ponnada

Smt Ambujam is honoured with Ponnada by her classmate Smt Indira.
Both belong to the first BSc. Batch of Botany
Sosamma Philip Memorial Endowment scholarship for the needy students of Botany
Mr. Jacob Philipose (from the first BSc. Botany Batch) handed over a
cheque for Rs. One lakh for instituting a scholarships for the needy
students of the Department of Botany, in memory of his mother late
Mrs. Sosamma Philip. Assistance will also be given to those who have
financial difficulty for the field trip during the final year. He
added that no student of UCC Botany will have financial difficulty
during their study period.

Mr. Jacob Philipose, keynote speaker and an alumnus of the first B Sc Botany
batch at UCC, speaks a few words on the scholarship instituted in memory
of Sosamma Philipose, his beloved mother as the Botany HOD looks on.
Our manager Prof. Mathew Koshy felicitated the afternoon session He
recalled the humble beginning of UCC and congratulated the team work
of the Department. We are indeed thankful to Mathew Koshy sir for all
his support provided to the department.
The key note speaker of the
day was Mr. Jacob Philipose. It was indeed an enlightening talk. He
remembered with gratitude all the goodness that he imbibed from UCC.
Quoting from the Chemistry practical sessions of our Revered Guru
Anantharaman sir, JP added "you can use, but can not waste even a
match stick which cost nothing, because my college has procured it
with enormous effort. When we produced hydrogen from one liter of acid
and one Kg of granulated Zinc (!!!) , Anantharaman sir had reminded us
that he could produce it from a few drops of acid and a pinch of Zinc."
Friends, I am sure that the audience are inspired by the message of
JP, who exhorted us to start emptying from half full cup. It is indeed
touching to see how he is a role model like the IIT alumni showing their
dedication to their alma mater.
Hope – UCC linkage strengthened by the establishment of DNA lab in UCC Botany Department
We are indeed inspired by the vision of Dr. K.C. Chacko from Denver who has
donated $40,000.00 for various projects in UCC within
the past two years. KC has also been talking with Hope College
Holland Michigan, and Hope has promised to gift some important
equipments for establishing a DNA lab in the department of Botany of
U. C. College. We wish that our faculty member Dr. P. Thomas Mathew
will be able to get a training in plant molecular biology lab of Hope
College during his US visit from February - May 2008 .
Our Projects
We also discussed the future projects of the Department. To make sure
that your UCC experience is provided to the future generations of
students, all our alumni and friends may join us in supporting the
current projects such as
• T.C.J Garden and Research Centre(with a plant molecular biology lab)
• Dr. K. Kuruvilla memorial endowment lecture
• Furnishing the B Sc. Lab with audiovisual aids
