| Prof. Azis is well known for his
work on the ecology of diverse types of aquatic ecosystems. He is the
author of several research papers and scientific reports. His work at
the International Desalination Research and Development Centre in Saudi
Arabia on the EIA of Power and Desalination plants has earned him global
recognition in the field of desalination industry. He is recognized as a
leading ecology consultant for the industry. Currently Prof. Azis is
also a Visiting Professor at the King Fahd University of petroleum and
Minerals, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He is one of the very few scientists
who has earned a D.Sc. degree for lifetime contributions in the field of
ecology. His specialization includes Industrial Marine Biology, Ecology,
Biodiversity, EIA and sustainable development. Dr. Abdul Azis has
served in several expert committees of the Govt. of Kerala on
environment related matters. As a research guide he had successfully
supervised the Ph. D. programmes of several candidates. In fact, the
first thesis submitted under him was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru award
for the best Ph.D. thesis from Indian Universities in 1993. He was the
Principal Investigator of a number or Research Projects both in India
and Saudi Arabia during the past 20 years funded by ISRO, NTPC, ICAR,
STEC AND SWCC. He is currently a member of the selection Committee
appointed by the Higher Education Dept., Govt. of Kerala for selecting
the best college in Kerala for the R. Shankar Award.
Prof. Azis was associated with number of social and scientific
organizations in Kerala, besides being a member in International
scientific societies. To list a few from Kerala, he was: President, All
Kerala University Research Scholars Organisation (1974 &’75); General
Secretary, Nehru Institute of Youth Affairs (1974&'75); Secretary
General, Centre for Indo-Arab Friendship and Co-operation (1986-90);
Life Member, Muslim Educational Society and District Secretary, MES,
Trivandrum(1980-‘83), Vice President Kerala University Teachers
Organisation (1990-'93), Founder Member and Member, Board of Governors
Centre for Science, Development Planning and Transfer of
Technology(1982-'93) and Life Member, KANFED Kerala since 1978.
Prof. Azis studied at the Govt Higher Secondary School, Thodupuzha.
He is also an alumnus of the Union Christian College, Aluva and the St.
Alberts College, Ernakulam. He obtained his Masters degree from the
Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography of the Cochin University
of Science and Technology and the Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees from the
Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala. |
