Mr. P O Mathew, who was a Pre-Degree student of UCC during 1964-66,
recently retired from the services of Cochin Shipyard Ltd. He had been
holding the post of Manager Finance in Shipyard. Now many people retires
from their jobs and do not see the news published here. So, what makes
this retirement so special?
To understand the significance of this event you should read a heart
rendering article published in the Malayala Manorama Sunday Supplement
dated 27/07/2008. Here is a copy of the article
PO Mathew Retirement Article from
Malayala Manorama
Mr. Mathew has lost both his legs at an early age due to polio.
Instead of feeling sorry for himself and blaming everyone for his
mishap, he decided to show an example to the rest of the world on how to
excel with the hand God had dealt to him. We are proud of P.O. Mathew.
Alumni such as P.O. Mathew tells us why UCC is such a special place.
Here are selected brief comments from UCC Alumni published in the UCC
Alumni Group after reading about the triumph of Mr. P.O. Mathew.

What a remarkable story! Today, is world day of peace, when we
remember those perished in atomic bomb explosion in Japan. Because of
people like you, this world has become still a place worth living. "I
have been crying for shoes, till I met a man without legs!"
May your retired life be as challenging as the serving one.
From distant Canada.

Sir, your story is very motivating and highly commendable.
Thanks and Regards,
Vidhu
I had not seen you after the Pre-Degree days. Your photo in the
article carries the same charming smile of our pre-degree days. The only
change is that you have turned a baldy. Really I was shocked to read
about the accident you had met with. The courage you had shown is beyond
comments. I proudly tell my wife Mercy, son Shaji and daughter Sherry
that you are my class mate. Hope your story will give strength to
thousands of physically challenged people.
With regards and best wishes
Yours sincerely,
A.H.Abdulkadar
