CP Mathew memorial academic Block dedicated
“It is a historic moment of rededication,” says our bursar Dr. K. I Manivarghese. The initiative for building ‘the New Hostel’ took place in 1926 and the hostel started functioning in 1928 with 46 students while Prof. C. P. Mathew was the bursar. The new academic block was dedicated on 17. 9 2004. The building took its shape as an extension of the new Psychology Block built in 1994.

Dr. Punnoose Mathew,
Manager, honouring Gopalan Achari with the golden shawl. Bursar Dr. Mani Varghese is in the middle. |
We also honoured Mr. Gopalan Achari, who was instrumental in planning most of our old buildings including the College chapel, Biology Block and even Skinner Hostel. C P Mathew Block holds high as a monument with fragrance of antiquity; since most of the wood materials were carefully reutilised; ‘each piece of wood being carved with deep faith in God’, as Gopalan Achari believes.

Report of the
Psychology Seminar
The women cell and the department of psychology U C College Aluva organized a three day National Seminar on “Mental Health Status and Quality of Life of Women” on 7th, 8th, and 9th of October 2004 for College teachers. The Seminar was organized in connection with the world mental health day.
The three-day National seminar brought together a distinguished assembly of delegates and many academic luminaries to U C College. There were 80 participants of which half were from other states. Resource persons of International stature presented papers and the collection of papers is certainly an asset to the academic community.
The status of women needs to be comprehended with reference to the critical context of the culture and value system. Women sexuality, mortality and morbidity rate of women, gender specific psychiatric issues, roll conflict and stress management of women were discussed in different perspectives. The discussion encouraged many young scholars to take up research on women issues. The objective to equip women to appreciate, encounter and accept the realities of life was enabled most successfully as the reflections projected. Students of psychology department conducted an exhibition to give awareness of mental health to others along with the seminar.
