UC College Unveils Plans for the New International
House |
|
The objective of the
International House is to help the College take up the challenges of
globalization and International Dependence. The college has exchange
programs with Austin College and Hope College, both of USA. As a result
of this, there will be more faculty and student exchange. There is a
need to provide residential facilities for the visiting international
guests as well as our alumni, facilities that provide international
standards. The International House is expected to provide that. (Read
more about the International House.)

We are introducing a new
feature called Class Photos. We hope that as we collect more and more
historic class photos, we will have an up to date collection of all
graduating classes in UCC.
Take a look at what we have so far.
If you don't see your class photo, how about sending it to us. You can
send a good scanned photo to the webmaster at living <at> icbs.com.

Department Botany Publishes Alumni Newsletter |
|
Botany Department has
published a newsletter so as to keep the alumni informed about what is
happening - and looking over the newsletter, lot of things are
happening. The department boasts of 100% pass out rate in the last
university examn along with the first ranker. It appears that they will
also have a state-of-the-art DNA Lab soon. WOW!! We want to congratulate
Dr. Thara Simon and her colleagues at the Department who have
collaborated to produce this excellent newsletter. Hopefully, the rest
of the departments at the college will follow the Botany Department's
lead. |
Sosamma Philip Memorial Endowment Scholarship
for the needy students of Botany |
|
During the Botany reunion on
January 12, 2008, the college announced the endowment of a Scholarship
named Sosamma Philip Memorial Endowment Scholarship. This scholarship
was made possible by the generous contribution from
Mr. Jacob Philipose who is an alumnus of the first B Sc. Botany Batch at UC
College. Jacob was the key note speaker at the reunion. This
scholarship, named after Jacob's mother, will enable the college to
provide scholarships for the needy students of the Department of Botany. Assistance will also be given to those who have
financial difficulty for attending the field trip during their final year. |
DNA Lab at UC College
A Fruit of the Collaboration between Hope College and UC
College |
|
In 2007, UC College has
signed a MOU with Hope College in Holland, MI establishing the framework
for faculty and student exchanges and to set up future collaboration in
academic research. The MOU was officially signed by Dr. K. E. Leelamma.
The MOU was the culmination of months of hard work and persistent
communication by Dr. Thara Simon, the faculty in charge of International
Collaborations in UC College.
Thara
had spent several months at Hope College on a scholarship from UBCHEA.
She had seen first hand about the high quality of research that is being
undertaken in institutions of higher education in the USA such as Hope
College. Although UC College has the talent to do the research, the
college does not have the equipment to do such work.
Enter Dr. K.C. Chacko, the
distinguished alumnus from UC College who is not bashful about funding
projects that he believes in. As a result of trilateral negotiations
between UC College, Hope College and Dr. K.C. Chacko, Hope College has
agreed to help UC College to set up a DNA Laboratory by purchasing and
gifting important equipment, as well as train the UCC faculty on how to
use the equipment. This is an important milestone for the college. It
also shows what people with vision and commitment can accomplish.
We salute all people who
played a pivotal role in establishing this center. |

Liberate the Liberal
Arts: Contrasting Kerala’s and United States’ Liberal Arts
Colleges
Educational
sociologists have argued that it is not content, but
structure which forms the mind of a student. An education
that glorifies authoritarian class environments, rote
learning, and streamlined courses denies the growth of young
people into analytical, creative, and well-rounded citizens.
Elizabeth Chatelain, an adult
volunteer at UCC, examines the educational system in Kerala
and contrasts it with that in the US. Her observations and
insights are worth reading and pondering by all those who
take their educational vocation seriously in the India
context.

Finding the Core and
Essence of a Unique College
by P. Thomas Mathew, Depart. of Botany
It would have been easy for UC College to develop a vision
that would transform itself into an economically profitable
proposition. But the college has chosen to keep itself
engaged in a debate involving core values. Plans for the
future will not be controlled by the promise of profit. The
original ethos, history and political essence of the college
will prevail.

Recalling the vision of the founders of UCC,
Rev. Thomas John briefly summarized the duty of Christians
as `not to be ministered unto, but to minister'.

Standing Behind
the Promise:
A Distinguished Alumnus Making it Whole

The name Dr. K.C. Chacko is
familiar to most of us. The first thing that comes to our
minds when we hear that name is his love for the alma mater,
UC College. Dr. Chacko had the privilege of working under
the founders of the college and he knows first hand what
their vision was for the college. He learned that it is
better to give than to talk big and not following up.
One of the long cherished
dream of KC (as he is called by his friends) is the
International House. KC knows that before a college can become a
world class institution, it need to have the logistics to
support it. In this global age, visitors need a place to
stay comfortably in a place that has state of the art
communication systems available. Plus, you need conferencing
facilities to communicate with outside world. International
House is designed to have all these. Recently, the college
GB has approved this project. (See Details here.)
The project also
has the support of several outside organizations.
Recently (December 2007), KC
has donated $10,000.00 towards this project. He hopes that
the rest of the alumni will take his lead and donate
generously to make this project a reality.
In the past, Dr. Chacko
contributed $5000 to the college. The primary purpose of
this donation was to help college in funding expenses
involved in international linkages and to fund the operation
of the alumni office.
Dr. Chacko was very hesitant to
publicize this information; I had convinced him that by
making this public, we may motivate other alumni to come
forward and to do his/her share to the college. One of Dr. Chacko's pet projects is the UCC Directory Project. He hopes
to see that come to come to fruition soon. (see below)
Dr. Chacko wants everyone to
know that you can now donate money to the college through
AANA, the North American Chapter of the UCC Alumni
Association that has got full Non Profit Organization
Registration from the Internal Revenue Service. So, all
donations made through AANA may be tax deductible (but check
with your tax advisor to be sure.)

tax benefits of donating through AANA can be found here. |
